Giants announce they will retire Bonds' No. 25 jersey this season

07 Febrero 2018

The San Francisco Giants will retire the No. 25 of Barry Bonds this season, the team announced Tuesday.

Prior to the announcement, the team a sort of unofficial rule that it would only retire the jersey numbers of members of the Hall of Fame, which is why the numbers of former Giants greats like Will Clark and Matt Williams remain in circulation.

"I'm both honored and humbled that the Giants are going to retire my number this season", Bonds said, per the team. Bonds spent 15 of his 22 major league seasons with San Francisco; the other seven were with Pittsburgh.

With numbers like those, Bonds should be a first-ballot hall of famer, but his steroid allegations and dealings with BALCO have held back the votes of many in the BBWAA. For his career, Bonds clubbed a MLB record 762 home runs, ahead of the 755 Hank Aaron hit.

Though Bonds has received increasing support for his Hall of Fame candidacy on an annual basis, he has failed to gain election to the Hall of Fame, owing to his ties to performance-enhancing drugs.

"By officially retiring No. 25, we will not only pay tribute to Barry as the greatest player of his generation, but also honor the legacy of two of the greatest players to ever wear a Giants uniform", Giants CEO Larry Baer said in a statement.

"For me to have played on the same field as them, wear the same uniform and now have my number retired, joining Willie and the other Giants legends is extremely special".

"No other Giants player has worn No. 25 since Barry's final season".

For years after Bonds' forced retirement in 2007, the Giants had to choose between what was right for Bonds and the fans who stream into AT&T Park, and what was right for the sport.

Bonds said that while growing up, his home away from home was Candlestick Park and that was where his father Bobby and Willie Mays his godfather played. "Number 25 has meant a lot to me throughout my career and it is even more special that I got to share that with my dad", said Bonds.

Bonds said he was honored in a statement.

Your reaction to that, understandably, might be: "The Giants haven't retired Barry Bonds' number yet?!?"

He was on 56.4 percent of Hall of Fame ballots for the 2018 class. He drew 36.2 percent in his initial appearance of 2013. Players need 75 percent to be inducted.

Time has helped Bonds and the Giants.
