Donald Trump associate attacks 'absolutely outrageous' campaign book

It's unclear what Bannon, who joined Breitbart in 2012, plans to do next, or who might take his place at Breitbart.

And that's a good thing for anyone hoping for a whiff of sanity to fumigate Washington, D.C.

My favorite characterization of this Bannon wisdom is his describing the Trumps as sunbathing on a beach as a Category 5 Mueller storm gathers on the horizon.

Trump said this on Saturday in response to allegation by Michael Wolff, in his new book Fire and Fury: Inside the White house which claimed that Trump is suffering from a neurological disorder.

The president responded by saying Mr Bannon had lost his mind and the White House suggested Breitbart News part ways with Mr Bannon as its executive chairman.

The president has been calling Mr. Bannon "Sloppy Steve" since the book came out, and said Mr. Bannon had nothing to do with his successes as president.

The "treasonous" and "unpatriotic" barbs were not aimed at Donald Jr., Bannon insists.

A British publicist who helped arrange the meeting had said one of the Russians would have damaging information on Hillary Clinton - Trump's presidential opponent. Reagan announced his diagnosis in a letter to the American people in 1994, more than five years after leaving the White House.

"I consider it a work of fiction", Trump told reporters.

"I've gone from being sympathetic to Steve to believing he's a genuinely bad guy, totally duplicitous", a former White House ally told Axios.

Even without the White House or Breitbart, Bannon will not hurt for an audience.

On Sunday, Bannon offered an olive branch of sorts, issuing a statement expressing "regret" for the comments made in the book and reversing course to praise both the president and his son.

But Bannon and Trump had been circling each other for some time before then.

An overarching goal of the Trump administration, Bannon said a month into the new administration, would be "the deconstruction of the administrative state". His crusade to overthrow establishment Republicans blew up in his face when he failed to get Roy Moore elected to Jeff Sessions's vacant Senate seat in December.

After days of silence amid withering criticism from his former colleagues and his largest benefactor, Bannon tried to make amends.

At Breitbart, company leaders have debated whether they could force Bannon from his top perch.

Elsewhere, a picture emerges of a president whose aides have to contain him as would nursery staff a toddler, while conversations - such as that on Trump's Marine One helicopter - show him justifying membership of the Ku Klux Klan. "Watch the hatred and unfairness of this CNN flunky!"
