Liverpool: Philippe Coutinho reveals he was interested in Barcelona transfer

20 Setiembre 2017

Philippe Coutinho has spoken publicly for the first time about his desire to join Barcelona this summer, but insisted he remains focused on "a good season" for Liverpool.

The Spanish heavyweights pursued the playmaker throughout the summer following Neymar's world-record £200m switch to Paris Saint-Germain.

Speaking to ESPN Brazil after the 1-1 draw against Burnley at Anfield, Coutinho stated: "I had a professional offer and in life these can sometimes be interesting".

"Neymar? Officially, we learned he was leaving when he told us...at the end of July we saw things weren't going well, but his father told us it was nothing", he added to TV3.

But it wasn't a winning comeback as Jurgen Klopps's side had to settle for a point after Mohamed Salah levelled Scott Arfield's opener for the visitors.

Bartomeu also commented on the future of club captain Andres Iniesta who, he says, has the power to decide how long he wants to wear the Barcelona shirt.

Esta posición fue rechazada por los países latinoamericanos en bloque, que llamaron a una solución diplomática y condenaron una eventual intervención armada.

Coutinho made his position clear by submitting a transfer request in an attempt to force the move through, but this too was immediately rejected by Liverpool.

The 25-year-old was the subject of three transfer bids from Barcelona - the biggest of which amounted to £114m ($149m) - but Liverpool insisted that the midfielder would not be sold for any price. Real Madrid and Juventus are both interested in the player.

My family too. But it's like I always said... it's a great honour to receive an offer for a great club like that.

Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho reveals that he was interested in joining Catalan giants FC Barcelona.

Coutinho has played 139 games for Liverpool since joining the club from Inter Milan in 2013.

"After weeks of negotiations, yesterday Liverpool asked us for €200m for the player", Soler told a news conference at the start of the month. There are no reports of a release clause in Mane's contract and neither has the player sounded out his will to leave the club, yet.
