Cubs pad lead with comeback win

23 Setiembre 2017

Kris Bryant hit a two-run home run, Anthony Rizzo tripled and the Cubs scored two runs in the 10th inning to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-3 Thursday night at Miller Park. Fortunately, the rest of the bullpen held strong, giving the Cubs a chance to win it in the 10th.

Byron Buxton's two-run single capped a three-run fourth inning that snapped a 1-1 tie and launched the visiting Minnesota Twins to a 12-1 rout of the Tigers in Detroit last night.

Here's a breakout of the scoring in the game. Both drives came off Jimenez, who likely pitched his final home game with the Orioles following a rocky four-year stint.

At the beginning of this second game, the Cubs led the Brewers by 4 1/2 games in the central division.

Maddon takes nothing for granted. The victory gives Houston 94 wins for the first time since going 97-65 in 1999. It was 3-2 Brewers at that point. Chicago is 9-and-1 in its past 10 games.

What started as a rebuilding season in Milwaukee is ending with a postseason push that has defied expectations. The Brewers' division hopes are fading - although they can change that by winning the three remaining games against the Cubs - but they are only one game behind Colorado for the second NL wild card.

"It's two tough games", Brewers manager Craig Counsell said.

Blue Jays 8, Yankees 1 • Ryan Goins hit a grand slam to boost host Toronto, ensuring New York had to wait at least another day to clinch a playoff berth. "We'll come in and try to get them". Shortstop Addison Russell appeared to hold the tag as Sogard's foot lifted off second for a split-second, and the call was confirmed on review.

The Brewers fell to third place, behind the Cards, who beat the Pirates on Friday night. Hendricks has a 1.18 WHIP with 108 strikeouts in 128 2/3 innings.

Stephen Vogt and Brett Phillips hit back-to-back homers in the second for Milwaukee. Jon Jay doubled, singled, scored twice and drove in one for the Cubs. The game was originally scheduled for a 6:10 CST p.m. first pitch but was moved to noon to accommodate a national television broadcast. After Knebel got Martin to strike out, Tommy La Stella was called on to pinch-hit. He slowed everything down and wasn't trying to do too much. The Yankees' Aaron Judge hit his AL-leading 46th homer. "They're still very, extremely meaningful games that will matter". That's going to happen.

Zobrist praised the competitive nature of both teams. Nelson said he thought his arm would be in a sling for a few weeks, followed by five or six months of rehab before he could start a throwing program.

The Chicago Cubs didn't get the greatest effort from starter John Lackey, but the cardiac Cubs rose to the challenge late.
