SCOTUS Will Hear Baker's Refusal to Bake Gay Wedding Cake

When the Supreme Court first heard the oral argument for the case back in mid-April, NBC was the only network to cover it. And in his report at the time, Williams sounded worried that the court would rule the way they ultimately did: in favor of a church over state.

WASHINGTON The Supreme Court agreed Tuesday to take up New Jersey's bid to allow sports betting at its casinos and racetracks, a case that could lead other states to seek a share of the lucrative market. The Philadelphia-based 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, in an 8-7 decision, held that people may challenge the ban depending on their particular criminal conviction, and found that it was unconstitutional as applied to the two men.

Both couples sued in state court, and a trial judge ruled that the U.S. Supreme Court's 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges decision legalizing gay marriage nationwide required that the same-sex spouses be named on the birth certificates.

"Simply fearing for one's personal safety is not considered good cause", a San Diego official said when the issue came before a court in the city.

There is no indication when the Colorado high court will reconsider the case. The petitioners challenged certain locally-set standards as too narrow, as well as the conclusion of a federal appeals court that the Second Amendment broadly does not protect the right to concealed carry.

Mark Silverstein, legal director of the Colorado ACLU, one of the organizations that argued against the voucher program, echoed Barnard.

"'The Church seeks state funds to improve the Learning Center's facilities, which, by the Church's own avowed description, are used to assist the spiritual growth of the children of its members and to spread the Church's faith to the children of nonmembers", wrote Sotomayor. "But the Framers made a clear choice: They reserved to all Americans the right to bear arms for self-defense. I do not think we should stand by idly while a State denies its citizens that right, particularly when their very lives may depend on it", he added.
