San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Matheus Silva is in a critical condition after a swimming accident in Lake Tahoe during the 4th July 'Independence Day' celebrations. Surely, this could happen to anyone, but there is a long and varied history of athletes injuring themselves outside of their sports; for example, NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson broke his wrist after falling off the roof of a golf cart, while Tigers pitcher Joel Zumaya once injured himself playing Guitar Hero.
Life-saving resuscitation measures were performed at the scene and he was transferred to a nearby hospital before being airlifted to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno. He was in critical but stable condition Tuesday.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Matheus, his family and friends". He was subsequently transported by air to another hospital in Reno, Nevada, the club said.
Silva, 20, is currently on loan with Reno 1868 FC, San Jose's United Soccer League affiliate.
